新孝道~讓爸媽自立,縮短病榻中的日子…
多年前,台大外文系教授劉毓秀接到社區警衛的數落電話:「教授,你90歲的爸爸剛剛扛著一包米,經過社區大門,外人看了都不忍心,你們是怎麼當兒女的?」
👴👵「最好的孝順,就是不孝。」
日本作家岸見一郎在他的新書《面對父母老去的勇氣》一書中,提到當父母老了,子女應該找機會,換一種方式來愛他們。
「我的方式就是,『有事,弟子不服其勞』,」一生致力平權與婦運的劉毓秀說,現在子女被傳統孝道綑綁,眼見父母衰老,為了降低罪惡感,就找外傭來照料,陪著走路、餵食、打理,導致老人家自理能力越來越差。
「其實,老人,也是可以訓練的,北歐就是一個很好的例子。」
1996年,劉毓秀第一次去北歐參訪養老機構。「當時我的父親73歲,公婆也邁向高齡,台灣同時面對老化與少子化兩列疾駛對撞的人口列車,對於老,我是非常惶恐的。」😓
💁♀️台灣老人平均臥病時間是7.3年,但北歐老人卻只有2個星期,劉毓秀在瑞典看到老人上超市、購物、上銀行,「我們常要求國家對老人制度,給予服務與支持,但子女在家庭中的責任呢?」
💡她體認到「提供父母保存生活能力與體力不退化」的照顧,才是現代子女的新孝道。💞
北歐回來後,劉毓秀決定從自己的父母開始,展開長達20年的實踐計畫。
🔔第一,住宅改變。
「老後體力會衰退,我們先幫父母從四樓老公寓換到有電梯的大樓,避免跌倒。」
🔔第二,不當宅老。
「只要身體硬朗,買菜、煮飯、洗衣、上銀行,都讓他們自己來,就算是看病,我也只帶看初診,後續由他們自己掛號,子女雖住在附近,但僅在假日陪爸媽上館子吃飯。」,老頑童般的生命態度是拒喝參茶,理由是:「若癱瘓了,就更不好走」 。
🔔第三, 有事,弟子不服其勞。
「我們不請外傭24小時看顧,而是委託彭婉如基金會尋找本土居家員,每周四個小時的鐘點服務,協助父母爬高彎腰搬重物,與清潔打掃,一個月才花4千4百元。」假日子女會帶父母出外踏青,平常,劉毓秀兄妹讓父母獨居,獨力料理生活大小事。
「我們讓他自己上超市,結果老頑童父親買了一堆泡麵來吃,這太不健康了,但我媽勸我『算了,他都90幾歲了。』」
「自立、自理、尊嚴」。
20年前,劉毓秀從北歐老人身上看到的,放到自己父母身上實踐。
劉爸爸去年底以93歲高齡辭世,劉毓秀說:「驗證了北歐模式是可行的,爸爸體衰臥病僅有短短數周,病榻中的父親,甚至拒絕母親準備的人參茶。理由是『補了氣,若癱了,讓我更不好走。』」
看著前幾年陪父母去賞花的照片,面對生命的璀璨與凋零,劉毓秀感激地說:「看到我爸爸這麼有智慧地與子女一同處理老化過程,讓我對於『老』這件事情,心底終於篤定,不再害怕。」
