El Condor Pasa
Tells the story of some indigenous workers in some mines in Peru
" It is " a Peruvian zarzuela written by Daniel Alomia Roble in 1 913 with a libretto by Julio de la Paz,it has one act and two scenes in which different scenes and different musical pieces that were all inspired by the Peruvian Andean folklore and, despite having been willen in 1913, tells a story that is very current,as you will see below . El Condor Pasa tells the of story of some indigenous workers in some mines in Peru in this case in the mine of the mining corporation called Yapaq in Cerro de Pasco where the indigenous people were/ exploited by the owners of these mines,who were also colonizers and the abuses and exploitation they suffered by leaders who buit their wealth at their expense are narrated and you will say: And why is it called The Condor Pasa ? Well,at the end of the zarzuela,Mr.king dies Mr. King was the owner of the mine,the one who had all the workers exploited and at that moment an Andean condor flies through the sky that the Peruvians see and interpreted as a symbol of freedom,as the end of their suffering. This piece became world famous with Simon and Garfunkel among other artists who added lyrics to this parade even though it originally had no lyrics and I don't like to add lyrics to what has been conceived and composed as only instrumental music,because as Hans Christian Andersen said, "where words fail,music speaks " . Some say that the composer drew,composed this parade reconstructing it from an 18th century Jaujino yaravi, but according to others, scholars also bears a lot of similarities apart from with yaravis jaujinos, with huaynos,Kashuas and other Peruvian dances, so it may actually be a creation based on Peruvian folklore and another theory that supports the creation and inspiration of this music is that probably in those mines there would not only be indigenous Peruvians but also afro- Americans African slaves that they brought to exploit as well and to work in the mine and with them they would take Peru its culture and its music and as scholars like Luis Salazar tell us,we can see many similarities with the popular song Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho although despite all these theories the truth is that it is an original creation thathas inspiration from many folklores and that is why it has so much richness .
